Puppy Wellness in HawaiiPuppies need to be de-wormed during their appointments. Most people do not realize that intestinal parasites are transmittable to humans. Some of these parasites are known to cause blindness. Always wash you hands after playing with your pets. Children should be especially careful to wash after playing with there family pet. Puppies are de-wormed at 8 and 12 weeks.

Puppies also need to start on a heart-worm preventative medication at their 8 week visit. Please ask our staff what product might be right for your puppy.

Puppies are typically vaccinated at 8, 12, and 16-weeks of age. Sometimes a breeder will give the 1st vaccine at 6 weeks and we can advise you when to give the next vaccination. The vaccines we give are for Parvovirus, distemper, leptospirosis, hepatitis, and parainfluenza.

If you are planning to board your pet or take obedience classes your pet will need to be vaccinated for Kennel Cough as well. This series of vaccines must be completed prior to letting your pet go out and play with other dogs and puppies. Do not take your dog to the beach or out in public before this process is complete as you run the risk of exposing them to all of these illnesses.

Rabies vaccination is not required in the state of Hawaii as it is a rabies free area.  If you plan on traveling or moving to the mainland or internationally we can provide this vaccination as required. Your dog will need to have another set of vaccines at one year of age and then every year it will need to be retested for heart-worm, de-wormed, stool sample analyzed and vaccinated.

Spay or Neuter

Keauhou Veterinary Hospital recommends have you puppies and kittens spayed or neutered between 5-6 months. Spaying females before the first heat is ideal. Neutering males at this time helps to prevent some of the behavioral problems such as marking and mounting. Please see surgery information in the services section for additional information about the surgeries we provide for our patients.
