 Makoa: Hawaiian for brave

The Makoa Keiki Marathon was the brain child of the Heads' 2 years ago when they saw that more and more children were being pulled out of extra curricular activites as the economy began to suffer. With people using words like insermontable and unobtainable, it is no wonder that children were feeling the brunt of the economy. Mom and dad have to work harder for food, housing, clothing and more, with medical bills sky rocketing and no end in sight, you add it all up and it looks to be so much more than anyone person could handle. From a child's point of view, it may even feel like the world is coming to an end.

The Makoa Keiki Marathon was designed to teach children that even though the task seems large like a marathon if you break it down into managable peices you can not only complete it but have a little fun along the way. The concept is not new, but the approach and attitude is different. We want the children and the adults to be proactive.

Designed to start at the beginning of the school year the 26.2 mile event takes place over 26 weeks. Each participant receives a ribbon and certificate upon completion of the event. We want each child to feel successful and pride at the chance to accomplish this marathon. We hope that the reward of the lesson can go forward with them and be applied to every aspect of their life. Large or small the can reach their goal one inch, one  yard, or one mile at a time.
